How to Choose a CNC Machining Supplier: 10 Questions That Predict Quality

CNC machining suppliers look similar on paper: the same machine brands, the same certifications, the same promises about precision. The differences show up later — in scrap rates, schedule slips and the quality of the engineering conversation. These ten questions cut through the marketing fastest; ask them before you release a drawing.

1. Who writes the DFM notes on my quote?

If the answer is “sales,” be careful. DFM feedback is only worth anything when a programmer or machinist has actually reviewed the file. Ask whether tolerances will be confirmed in writing before the order starts.

2. What will you tell me if my tolerance is impossible?

Every geometry has a tolerance floor. A good supplier tells you the realistic number at quoting stage — a bad one accepts the order and “interprets” the drawing later.

3. How many setups does your route assume?

Setup count drives cost, lead time and error accumulation. Asking this forces a real process answer and reveals whether the quote was estimated or engineered.

4. What is measured, and with what?

“Inspected to drawing” is not an answer. Ask which dimensions go on the CMM report, how first article is handled, and what records ship with the parts.

5. What is your scrap-rate history on parts like mine?

Nobody boasts about scrap. Producers who track it can usually quote a number for a comparable program — and those who track it at all are the ones you want.

6. How does a deviation get handled?

The test case: a dimension lands just outside drawing. Does someone quietly ship it with a note, or does a deviation report reach you before the box leaves the dock? The second behavior is what ISO 9001 is supposed to feel like.

7. Who owns the fixtures and programs I pay for?

Tooling ownership and transfer should be explicit in the order terms — especially for molds, dedicated fixtures and CAM programs.

8. What are the real lead times, including finishing?

Ask for the schedule end-to-end: material, machining, heat treatment, finishing, inspection, freight. Shops that subcontract finishing without booking it properly are where schedules go to die.

9. Which certifications are actually on the facility you will use?

IATF 16949 and ISO 13485 are site-specific. If your program requires them, confirm the certificate covers the building your parts will be made in — and ask for the certificate number and expiry.

10. Can you do the first article and a small batch before we talk volume?

Suppliers who invite the prototype order are confident in their process. Suppliers who only want volume orders are telling you something important.

The meta-question

After the call, ask yourself one thing: did the supplier push back on anything? A shop that never challenges a design, a tolerance or a date is either not reading the file or not planning to respect it. The right partner argues about the details early — because that is where the money and the risk live.
